The first level of diver training within BSAC is the Ocean Diver course, or Discovery Diver if you are aged between 10 and 12 years old. You will also gain training in areas such as nitrox diving and rescue skills which are often not taught at entry grades, or are charged for with some other agencies.
Courses are run as a structured combination of theory and pool sessions before you progress to open water lessons and ultimately gain your certification. You may then progress through the diver training grades, or just enjoy diving within the limits of your grade.

BSAC clubs are non-profit and run by volunteers. Instructors give their time freely, their incentive isn't a salary but a shared passion for diving and passing that knowledge & experience on for others to enjoy. This also means that you can progress at a pace that suits you rather than at a schedule set by the diving school.
The cost of training works out at around £415 (less if a junior or student member). This includes club levies, BSAC membership with third party liability insurance , training materials, use of the pool and use of club equipment whilst training. The only additional cost is entry fees to the site used for open water dives. The most well-known franchised diving school will often charge around £500-£700 for the initial course. See the fees page for a breakdown of individual costs.
Your first step towards certification is joining us for a try dive if you have never tried it before, or get in touch with us at info@swale-divers.org.uk.
